01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Stepping off the busy streets of Shibuya, climbing the stairs, and opening the door to Bistrot Gourmand reveals a relaxed, wood-accented retreat. While the atmosphere is delightfully casual and unpretentious, the dishes arriving at the tables carry the hearty, substantial character of an authentic French bistro.

A natural place to begin is the house specialty, roast Chabiton pork from Kagoshima Prefecture. Cooked slowly and evenly through its generous thickness, the pork releases sweet marbling and deep, natural umami with every bite. A dedicated house sauce crafted from chicken bone broth underlines the rich meat, keeping each substantial portion satisfying straight to the finish. For those craving other hearty options, the generous steak frites served with a mountain of pomme frites and the gently cooked, succulent chicken leg confit offer equally rewarding alternatives.

Self-Tapped Cask Wine and Clever Small Plates

The distinctive wine service is designed to pair seamlessly with the meat dishes. Tapping directly into their own privately imported cask wines, the bistro features a self-pour format where diners can sample from their choice of barrels. With a glass in hand, opening bites such as tarragon-scented carottes râpées, oeuf mayonnaise, and gizzard confit naturally spark lively conversation before the main course.

Midday dining is just as welcoming, offering well-rounded lunch plates complete with soup, salad, bread, dessert, and coffee, alongside popular prix fixe courses that let guests tailor their own appetizers and mains. To finish, a crème brûlée cracked open at the crisp caramelized surface, enjoyed with hot coffee, leaves a lingering, comforting warmth.

Whether pulling up a stool at the counter for a quiet glass on your own or gathering friends around a table in the evening, this is a welcoming address for generous, unfussy dining.
